FEBUEDER WHEN YOU SPEAK TO MINGUS

The dark, twisted electronics of the new Febueder track are clear from its opening moments. Its synth lines are quickly combined with juxtaposing jazz drum recordings, solemn horns and a moody lead vocal. Influence, as the title, ‘When You Speak To Mingus’ suggests, comes directly from Charles Mingus, with the iconic sound of his classic American jazz sound working its way into this incredibly modern, experimental piece. Kieran Godfrey explains how the track came to be: “I had been introduced to Charles Mingus - Moanin and fell in love with its ferocity. I Listened to the softer side of Albert Ayler and occasionally acid jazz but this composition is iconic. Sam bestowed saxaflute which is essentially a saxophone mouthpiece attached to a bamboo flute”. The two-piece aren’t afraid to take the listener down a route completely alien to what they might expect, with the manic semi-electronic jazz of the first half giving way to a downtempo acoustic ending that just about sums up what Febueder are about. - Dan Peeke
